Blackjack Strategy

Blackjack can be a fun and profitable game when visiting a casino. However, the key is to ensure you have a solid Blackjack Strategy that provides the best chance to win in the long run. There are many strategies in use, some good and some bad. Selecting the correct strategy can make the difference between winning and losing.

The first key to a successful Blackjack Strategy is to remember that the opponent is the dealer, not the other players. A player needs to make decisions based not only on his hand, but also the hand of the dealer. One strategy, and a poor one at that, is to concentrate on never busting. The player with this strategy assumes that every next card is going to be a ten and once the hand being held is twelve or over, the player holds. While this does reduce the odds of busting, it completely ignores the dealer’s hand. For example, if the player holds at twelve, but the dealer’s up card is a ten, the odds of losing increase considerably.

Another useful element of a successful Blackjack Strategy is simplicity. Blackjack can move fairly quickly at times and the player who can execute a strategy in this faced paced environment reduces the likelihood of costly errors. A classic example is where a player determines his hand and quickly decides if standing or hitting is the right choice regardless of the dealer’s hand. For example, a player may always stand with a hand over seventeen and always hit with a hand below eight. If the player’s hand is between nine and sixteen, then the player makes a decision based on the dealer’s hand. For example, if the dealer’s up card is between two and six, the player hits or if the dealer’s up card is between seven and ace, the player hits.

An often forgotten aspect of Blackjack Strategy is the betting pattern. When played well, blackjack is often a 50/50 game. What this means is that while the house has a slight advantage, the odds are fairly even. With the right strategy, the odds of losing several hands in a row are minimized. The impact to the betting pattern is that if a player loses two or more hands in a row, he should consider increasing the bet on the next hand. If the odds hold true, lost money can be reversed with one hand.

One last Blackjack Strategy that any dealer can employ is experience. The more hands a player plays, the more experience and skill the player develops.
