First off, you do not need a degree in MIT for advanced mathematics to become a proficient card counter, although it wouldn’t hurt. Bottom line, card counting is done with a basic tally system, where an observant player keeps track of which cards have been dealt, and then adjusts the tally by +1 or -1 for specific cards. Done over a period of time, a player can then use this tally to figure out if the card count is either favorable or not.
When a deck is favorable, a player can increase the amount of their bets, because they have made the deck more predictable. When the deck is less favorable, the player can reduce their wagers, to conserve their losses. The scope of this article will not include specifics, check this out if you want to learn how to count cards, it details a simply and effective strategy. That being said, there are a number of factors that a player, who is engaged in a card counting strategy must keep in mind when playing, such has how many decks are in play, when the decks are shuffled, how many aces have been played, etc. All these factors affect the count, and thus must be incorporated into any calculation.
There are a couple of things that people need to keep in mind regarding card counting. First, employing this strategy too successfully can result in bringing on heat from the casino, and in extreme cases it can result in being barred. Second, and perhaps more importantly, this is not a magic road to riches. A successful card counting strategy does reduce the advantage of the casino by a couple of points, but it is hardly fool proof. Sound play, and responsible money management are still factors, regardless of what the count is.
